Getting the Most Out of Academic Advising

Academic advising is a collaborative process where academic advisors contribute to students’ educational, professional, and personal development. There are different types of advisors available to support your entire undergraduate Lehigh experience. From academic advisors, to study abroad advisors, to career coaches, athletic coaches, and more, faculty and staff are ready to guide you, encourage you, and empower you to take ownership of your educational and career paths.

Your academic advisor will help you:
  • Identify your academic interests and explore majors.
  • Set goals based on your values and interests and develop an academic plan.
  • Understand academic requirements and policies, and articulate the purpose of your curriculum.
  • Overcome academic obstacles.
  • Understand how your undergraduate studies can influence your career and life goals.
  • Find meaningful opportunities to pursue, including high-impact educational practices (such as study abroad, internships, and research).
  • Access campus resources to support your success.

To get the most out of your academic advising and overall undergraduate experience, you should:
  • Communicate with your academic advisor regularly, and respond to your advisor when they reach out to you.
  • Meet with your academic advisor at least once a semester.
  • Come to your advising meeting prepared with questions and (for pre-registration meetings) a tentative class schedule.
  • Share your curricular and co-curricular activities, interests, and goals with your academic advisor.
  • Reach out to your advisor if you encounter any academic or personal challenges.
  • Ask questions and be open to new ideas and perspectives.
